Stay on Trend with Stunning Encaustic Tiles

Charming and traditional encaustic tiles add a decorative and classic element to the floors and walls of any home or project. The word encaustic comes from the Greek word ‘enkaustikos’ which means “to burn in”. The Greeks used it for sculptures and architecture purposes, but it didn’t take long before the Egyptians started using the techniques for their own practices. Europeans used encaustic art for tile making. Today, encaustic tiles are popular in the interior design world for their stunning patterns and eye-catchy colours.

Why Encaustic Tiles?

Encaustic practices date back centuries and have been used in many settings, even in churches. What makes encaustic tiles unique are the enormous amounts of various design opportunities and different colors. They can even be made to replicate the look of hardwood floors or other natural stones. A tile can have up to 6 colors and also never wear out. Encaustic tiles are water resistant and since dirt just rests on it, it is extremely easy to clean and maintain. The tiles don’t crack easily, and if maintained right, encaustic tiles can last upwards of 20 years. Whenever a tile cracks, replacing it is quite simple. To save time, be sure to store a few extra tiles in case of an emergency. Depending on the environment, the tiles can also be used for indoor and outdoor purposes.

Are Encaustic Tiles Right for You?

Encaustic Tiles vs Cement Tiles

Cement tiles are mostly referred to as encaustic because most modern designs are created with cement. While cement tiles and encaustic tiles may look similar, they are not the same. There is no such thing as encaustic cement tiles. A lot of people mix them up and eventually purchase tiles for the wrong purpose. What separates the two tiles apart are the quality, the production process and the different features both tiles provide.
Cement tiles are made from a mixture of sand and the color comes from mixed minerals. These minerals are poured into a mold and then compressed under a lot of pressure to harden. Cement tiles are not fired up like encaustic tiles.
As mentioned earlier, encaustic tiles are made out of one to six colors of clay that are inlaid together to make a pattern. The tiles are then fired up to harden.
It is important to know which tile you want and the space it will be placed in. For example, encaustic tiles are frost proof so they can be used outdoors. Cement tiles are mostly found in warm countries as they are not able to withstand freezing temperatures.
Beware as there has been a lot of debate on whether to refer to cement tiles as encaustic tiles. It is important to let the tile manufacturer or retailer know where the tiles will be installed and the condition of the location.

Keep Your Porcelain Tiles in Tip Top Shape Using Our Maintenance Advice

Porcelain tiles are known for their extreme durability and low maintenance. Although all of our porcelain tiles are liquid and stain resistant, there are several measures you can take to restore their original shine. Your porcelain designer tiles will last a life time, if you use them as recommended and maintain them well. The initial cost when installing your porcelain tiles may be higher compared to other types of tiles, but it’s an investment worth making. You will no longer have the added cost of removing and replacing them after several years.
There are some general maintenance tips and tricks that will help keep your tiles in top shape. It is important to make a distinction between glazed and unglazed porcelain tiles. Below we provide cleaning tips for both types of porcelain tiles and some general cleaning tips.

Unglazed Or Unpolished Porcelain Designer Tiles

Both glazed and unglazed tiles are made the same. The only difference is a glass layer called a glaze. The glazed tile has a glass layer that gets fused to its surface using an immense heat. Due to the lack of a coating, unglazed porcelain tiles are less resistant to staining. Over time, some staining and discolorations could appear. You can easily prevent this from happening by following these tips. Before you get started, keep the following tings in mind:

• Always clean small areas at a time, such as two or four feet squares. This goes for every step we describe in this article.
• Test a cleaning product on unused tiles. This way you make sure your scrub pads don’t scratch the tiles and the cleaning product will not damage or discolor them.

You can clean your unglazed porcelain designer tiles by following the next five steps.

• Vacuum and sweep the area exhaustively. You want to remove all dust and dirt from your porcelain designer tiles.
• Saturate the floor with hot water and a cleaning solution. If you don’t want to leave any chemical residue on your floors, you can use a vinegar-and-water mixture. Allow the cleaning solution or vinegar-and-water mixture to stand on the floor for five to ten minutes. You should never allow it to dry because these tiles are more prone to water penetration than other materials.
• If you have tenacious stains, use a soft bristle brush to scrub in the cleaning solution.
• Wipe away the dirty cleaning solution. Rinse the area with clean, hot water with a mop or a wet vacuum.
• Allow the tiles to dry or dry them with a clean towel or a microfiber cloth.
Another cleaning tip with long-term cleaning benefits is an annually sealing treatment for your unglazed porcelain tiles. The sealer will prevent dirt and contaminates from getting in the porous porcelain tiles. Additionally, the sealer helps to keep the grout from getting dirty and stained.

Glazed or Polished Porcelain Designer Tiles

Glazed or polished tiles have a thin protective layer on their surface. The polished tiles are treated with a melted glass gaze which is then poured over the surface of the tile. Due to this, the tiles are impervious to water penetration and most stains. These factors make it easier to maintain these porcelain tiles.

You can clean your unglazed porcelain designer tiles by following the next five steps.

• Sweep or vacuum dirt and dust from the floor. We advise you to use a dry dust mop instead of a broom.
• Mop the floor with a mild cleaning solution or a vinegar-and-water mixture. Do not let moisture puddle or pool on the tile.
• Mop again with clean and clear, hot water before the cleanser dries
• Dry the tile carefully with a clean towel or a microfiber cloth.
• Increase the shine by rubbing out any water spots. To create a high shine you can clean the porcelain tile with a piece of cheesecloth.

General Cleaning and Maintenance Tips

To keep your unique porcelain designer tiles in optimal condition you should clean them regularly. We advise you to clean them as often as two times per week. This way, you prevent your tiles from wearing out due to small sand particles. Start by using a soft-bristle broom to sweep the tiles and vacuum them with the brush attachment. Then, mop the porcelain tiles once a month with a vinegar-and-water mixture or a suitable commercial cleanser. Last but not least, wipe up stains as soon as possible. Although these tiles are resistant, if stains stay on the tiles for too long they will shade slightly.

Factors to Consider when Choosing your Designer Tiles | Toronto

When it comes to deciding what type of tile to install in your home, sometimes it may be hard to choose the perfect fit to match the overall look of your house. With all the different tiles available in the market, it can be hard to start because each type of style offers unique benefits. Here are some guidelines and benefits to make things easier for you when re-decorating your home with new floor tiles.

A Fresh Start

Start by analyzing your home décor and decide if the style that you currently have is the one that you want to pursue. If it is not, a wonderful way to get inspired with new ideas is to turn to décor magazines and online interior decoration websites.

The Tile Size

It’s important to take the different sizes, shapes and materials available for tiles into account when choosing the right ones for your space. Usually, smaller tiles are used in both the kitchen and bathrooms. Larger tiles are normally installed in living rooms and larger spaces. Typically, smaller tiles work best in smaller rooms and bigger tiles are more suitable for larger rooms.

The Room Size

In the previous step, we discussed the tile size, but the size of the room itself is just as important. Large tiles make a room feel bigger and airier. The benefit of installing tiles in a bigger room is that you can get creative and use different size and shapes without cluttering it. Smaller rooms have the opposite effect, so you need to be careful because usually you want the room to appear bigger and welcoming. In a small room, light coloured tiles will make the smaller space feel larger.

Colour Impacts Mood

Colours in a room can greatly impact people’s moods. That’s why when choosing the tiles you want to decorate your home with, you must consider the feel you want to achieve in your room. A serene and relaxing atmosphere or happier and warmer feeling is easy to achieve with different colours and tiles. For example, black tiles make a huge statement in a room as it portrays power and sophistication. Orange on the other hand is an energizing colour, and is considered warm and friendly. This colour is really versatile and can work with any room, but works especially well in the hallway where it gives guest a warm and positive welcome.

The Grout

Most people never think about the grout when considering tiles. However, the grout gives a contrasting effect with the tile that you implement in your room. A contrasting grout will emphasize the lines and design of a tile so be sure to choose the right colour for your grout.

Follow the light

The amount of natural light in a room can also affect a person’s mood. The sun’s rays, filled with warmth and vitamin D make you feel positive. So, it’s natural that bright rooms make us feel happier, more alive and vibrant. If this is the feeling you are going for, then consider a gloss tile as this will suit a dark space and it reflects more light, as does a lighter colour.

Get Inspired By These Designer Wallpaper Trends For 2018

A couple of weeks ago we provided you with some advice on how to choose the right wallpaper for your interior. Since we’re three months into 2018 we thought it would be the right time to inform you of this year’s designer wallpaper trends. Just like any other year, there are several types of wallpaper that are trending this year. By informing you on the latest trends we hope to inspire you when choosing wallpaper for your home.

Keep It Simple with Geometrical and Symmetrical Shapes

Geometrical and symmetrical shapes suit the current trend for minimalist and abstract interior designs. If you like more modern creations, you should definitely take a look at geometric prints. These patterns deliver the best of both worlds. By using prints featuring bright and vibrant colors you can make the wallpaper bounce off your wall. At the same time, you can introduce order and dimension into your home thanks to the symmetrical shapes and simple clean lines from the geometric patterns.
Basically, this designer wallpaper pattern is your go to pattern if you want to quickly and easily add character to a room that lacks ambience, without losing order and dimension in your home.
The great thing about this geometrical or symmetrical designer wallpaper is the variety in patterns and the different types of atmospheres they create. To add joy and playfulness to a room we advise a pattern that is busy with color and fun. Or opt for a simple pattern with softer colours to create a calming atmosphere. Finally, there are some things to keep in mind when choosing a geometrical or symmetrical pattern. Always pay attention to the size of the pattern to make sure it’s scaled to the room and let the room guide the color.

Go for an Effortlessly Luxurious Edge with Metallics

Are you looking to create an open air living space? Metallic designer wallpaper can do the work for you. Metallics reflect light evenly around the room and therefore make the space seem larger and more open. Another interesting feature is the combination of dark and light reflectance. Depending on what angle you’re viewing the paper from, this designer wallpaper will appear light and bright or dark with a deeper color. The trendy wallpaper changes constantly result in a 3D, almost living appearance to the viewer. Keep in mind that metallic prints can overpower the design due to its eye-catching appeal. To prevent this from happening you can choose to tone the print down with spots, stripes and floral patterns. You can even opt to add wallpaper to just one wall which will make the wall stand out even more.

Pink Is Here to Stay

In 2016 we were gifted rose gold. The year after, rose gold transitioned into the Millennial Pink trend. This year pink designer wallpaper will keep gaining popularity and reign as the new black. You can use a pink pattern to complement your room without overpowering it. Another great thing about Millennial Pink is the fact that the color is not exactly defined. There are tons of undertones for you to choose form so you can match your wallpaper color easily with the rest of your interior. For example you could use pinks with cool undertones (these fall towards blue-grey colors) to match a grey and white interior. Or you can match warmer pinks (the ones with a red undertone) with warm materials like gold or copper. To keep on top of the trends we advise you to opt for subtle or pale salmon pinks. If the idea of a completely pink wall makes you feel uncomfortable, you can go for a pink feature wall. Use patterned pink wallpaper or geometric wallpaper in pretty pink tones. Either way, there are plenty of ways to implement pink wallpaper in your interior without adding a childish character to it.
