The Benefits of Porcelain Tile versus Marble Tile
As a new home-owner, contractor or someone in the midst of renovations, choosing new tile for your home can be challenging. There are so many options and products on the market, it can become overwhelming. Besides the obvious appearance, there are many other factors to keep in mind such as durability and maintenance. Two very popular materials for tiles are marble and porcelain. Knowing the difference between both is important when making a final decision. What many people are unaware of are the benefits porcelain tiles offer compared to marble tile, which we will explain clearly below.
1. Porcelain Tiles are easier to maintain
While both porcelain and marble tiles are best installed by a professional, porcelain does not require as much maintenance. Marble tile must be continuously cleaned, dusted and mopped to prevent it from absorbing any liquids or staining. In comparison, porcelain is much less likely to stain and thus requires less maintenance.
2. Porcelain is more durable
Although marble can be used outdoors, it will only withstand the outdoors in areas where it rarely freezes or rains. Marble is more commonly seen on walls, indoor flooring, backsplashes and kitchens. Porcelain tiles on the other hand are harder and can be used both indoor and outdoor surfaces. Porcelain tiles are less sensitive to cold or rain and are very strong and dense. They are also frost resistant, stain, scratch and moisture resistant.
3. Marble is more expensive
There is a significant difference when it comes to the price of both tiles. While porcelain generally ranges in price from CAD $7 to $15 per square foot, marble can cost you almost twice as much. Of course, there are many factors involved in pricing but as a general rule; porcelain tiles are considerably less expensive than marble tiles.
Where marble is a natural stone mined from quarries, porcelain is manufactured from clay. This means that each marble tile is unique while porcelain can be custom-tailored in different colors, textures and patterns. This allows porcelain to look like natural stone but at a much lower price point.
5. You can choose Porcelain that looks like Marble
Marble remains a natural stone, which undeniably carries aesthetic weight and value. It is also clear that marble adds elegance and luxury to any home. However, if you are budget conscious and prefer not to spend the high price tag, there are numerous porcelain tiles made to look exactly like marble. This way, you get the durability of porcelain, but the aesthetic value of marble.
